What To Include In Your Promotional Poster Design

Creating a promotional poster design, whether you want to share it on your social media handles or hand it out to prospective clients, can be nothing less than challenging. Promotional poster designs should align with your brand’s existing visual brand identity and at the same time, effortlessly convey the promotional information to the viewers.

An effective promotional poster is one that is capable of engaging your target audience in an impactful and emotional way. If you have a product launch or an event coming up that you want to promote, here are the top things that you should include in your promotional poster design:

1- Identify the Goal and Target Audience of Your Poster

Your poster design should be directly dependent on what you are trying to achieve with your promotional poster:

  1. Do you want to inform your customers about an upcoming webinar?

  2. Is there a new product about to launch?

  3. Are you about to announce a big sale for your store and website?

  4. Are you opening a new branch of your business?

Identify the main goal behind promotions and then use it to guide all of your design choices accordingly. For instance, if you are informing customers of a webinar, you want to make sure that the date, topic, and time are very clearly visible on the poster. Similarly, if you are creating a promotional poster for an upcoming sale, you want to make sure that you are adding some red-coloured sale signs in the poster to grab attention.

You should also consider the kind of audience you are trying to reach with your poster. So, if you are planning a webinar for technical professionals, your design should be more minimal, direct, and sophisticated with only a few accent colours.

But if you are a kidswear brand announcing a big sale on your website, your promotional poster should be fun, engaging, and filled with colours.

2- Create an Outline for Your Poster

While a picture is worth a thousand words, your promotional poster does need some content to go with the design. It's always a good idea to create an outline of all the information you want to include in your poster before you start designing so that the final poster design compliments the text.

Create a list of all the details you want to include in your poster. This can include but is not limited to:

  • Event name

  • Date

  • Location

  • Pricing

  • Any other instructions that the customers should know

Though, keep in mind that when it comes to posters, less is always more. You should keep the content to a minimum and only include the most important information, so as to not confuse or overwhelm readers. Instead, you can add a QR code on the poster to share detailed information about your promotions.

3- Choose the Right Color Scheme

Colour selection is one of the most basic necessities of visual design, and yet, it can be difficult to nail for those new to design. The colours will be the first thing people notice in your poster, which is why it's crucial to get the colour theme just right.

The easiest way to pick colours is by just choosing your brand’s main colours and creating a design around that. Another way is by selecting colours that align with your poster’s goal and target audience by applying colour psychology.

Though note that you shouldn’t use more than three colours or your design may end up looking clumsy. Follow the colour hierarchy in your poster design -- The primary colour should take up 60% of the total design space, and the other two colours should take up 10-30% of the total space.

4- Add Images or Illustrations

The right image and illustrations can make your poster design stand apart. After all, when people see a design, they notice the visuals first and then the text. If your visuals aren’t impressive enough to entice the viewers, they won’t stop to read the text.

While picking out images and illustrations, make sure they are relevant to your poster goal and overall messaging. Depending on the amount of information you want to add to the poster, you can either make the images the focal point of your poster or the text.

Make sure that you buy the necessary licenses for stock images being used in your designs to ensure you don’t run into any legal issues later.

5. Add Content to your Poster

With your initial design done, it's time to add promotional details to your poster. After all, the main priority of your poster is to inform customers of the brand event or promotion.

Ideally, your promotional poster should have three different types of content:

  • Tagline: This is the main catchy headline of your poster which should entice the viewer to read more. For the tagline, go for display and readable typefaces that are both interesting and eye-catchy. The font size should be large enough to make the taglines readable even from a distance

  • Promotion details: Now that you have the viewer's attention with your tagline, it's time to get into the details of the promotion like date, time, location, and registration details. The font size for this section should be smaller than the tagline, but not so small that it's difficult to read.

  • Other information: This is mainly all the other information that isn’t as important but you still need to mention it in your posters like your website and social media handles. The font size for this can be the smallest.
